Police taser timeline under scrutiny


After the killing of a police officer, there is usually outrage and a search for answers.


But the search for truth doesn't begin until the facts are in the public eye.

Then the investigation takes a back seat to a more critical and often emotional debate about what happened.

No wonder there is confusion and frustration around how the Dallas Police Department handled the investigation after the fatal police-involved shooting of a black man.


Some investigators have described the shooting as an act of hate by a white officer.


Others have said the deadly shooting was justified by a man who had a dispute with two women over money.


"I think that the community feels very betrayed," said Jason Capers, former Dallas police chief. "They're in shock by the outcome, not knowing what to think."

The investigation into the Dallas officer-involved shooting is still underway, and it's unclear how long the two families will want to wait, given the uncertainty surrounding the investigation and the circumstances surrounding the killing of Jamar Clark.


The investigation was led by former Dallas police chief Eddie Johnson, who retired in 2012 amid a series of controversies that included the use of excessive force, racism and corruption, a lawsuit and wrongful convictions.


A spokeswoman for the Dallas Police Commission declined to comment about the timeline, but in a statement read Monday night, it said, "As our investigation continues and as more details come to light, we will share with the media in the days ahead, in light of the fact that both family and police are currently providing the media with updates."

Dallas police say that no shots were fired and that three people were taken into custody after officers responded to calls of gunshots around 2 p.m. Monday morning outside a house and an alley near North Lamar and Oak Streets.


Police said all three men involved were taken into custody, but the case remains under investigation by the Dallas Police Department.


A spokesman for the Office of the Independent Monitor said that a review would be conducted by federal law enforcement officials as part of the investigation, which could take up to 60 days.
